Practical Sparring in a Self Defense System

Rick Collette 09/02/2005

rcollet@gmail.com

More and more I am running into the school of thought that says "Sparring is a good way to develop bad habits." Naturally, we don't want to build muscle memory or create natural responses to given situations that are wrong. This kind of practice could lead to serious injury or even death when the time comes to actually defend ourselves in a real scenario. Following along those same lines, sparring is considered by some to be a waste of time or filler for instructors who have run out of things to do for that session.

I would maintain that if sparring were performed under proper supervision, and with the right goal, then it can be an extremely useful tool.

First, sparring can build stamina. A Lot of us can perform our Kata or walk through our belts techniques without becoming tired because we have done them so many times. What happens on the street when we are up against someone who is not only hopped up on adrenaline, but also drugs; say meth amphetamines? How long will we last if the attacker just never seems to tire? Sparring drills can aid in stamina training and prepare us for these too-long bouts.

Another area where sparring can be beneficial is actual technique training. With techniques, we stand facing each other and run through practiced drills where we know exactly which attack is coming and which technique we are expected to perform. These are traditional learning drills, and should never be abandoned. In fact, this has been the best method for committing the techniques to memory for me. Now suppose we run into a situation where the attack comes from an angle we are not expecting? The old cliché of "Expect the unexpected." Comes to my mind as I write this, however, most of us are training for the expected.

Here's where Technique Sparring comes into play. This is not the typical tournament sparring, but sparring with actual real techniques. And it behooves me to point out at this time that none of the routines described here should be attempted without proper supervision. You can really get hurt. Safety is key – pad up, and make sure your instructor is controlling the situation.

In the average training circle or Dojo, you will have people of varying skill and breadth of knowledge. You can exploit these skill levels by technique sparring. You will learn reactions to different attacks from various angles, speeds, and levels of experience.

There are several technique drills that I use, which include the traditional "one-step" type, but also "Minute-Man/Woman", "Timed Technique Open", "Techniques for Points", and "Center-Man/Woman". The technique drills described here are merely my own way of doing things. The idea of publishing them is that maybe we'll get some feedback on how to improve on them, or even learn new drills.

Minute-Man/Woman: The student stands in the center of the mat. There is a timekeeper (usually the instructor) who carries a stopwatch and also controls the matches. When the timekeeper starts the clock, he will say "GO!", at which point another student will step into the mat and kumite will begin. This is a free-form sparring session. This should last one minute. Once the minute is up, the timekeeper says "NEXT!", and the attacker steps out, and another student steps in. The idea is that one student has to spar with the rest of the students. Once he/she has gone through everyone, he/she will step to the end of the line and the next student stays in the center until they have matched everyone else.

Timed Technique Open: Set a time limit based on the students experience (1 minute for white belt, 3 minutes for green belt, 5 minutes for brown and black belts, etc). Two students face each other until the order "Kumite!" is given by the referee (usually a senior student or instructor). The students can start an attack from anywhere using any weapon, but the defender can only respond using an actual full technique (or several techniques). The points are given for a completed technique. The student with the highest number of completed techniques in a given bout wins.

Techniques For Points: This is the same as the Timed Technique Open, except there is no clock – there is a predetermined number of points that must be reached before the end of the match is called. At the end, the student who reached that number first is the winner.

Center-Man/Woman: The class lines up in a circle. The instructor stands in the center, and one student in front of him. The instructor then signals a student in the ring to perform a specific type of attack, to which the student in the center responds with a full technique. Once the technique is finished, the attacker stays and the defender takes the others place in the ring. This can continue indefinitely or until the entire class has had a shot in the center.

The main point to stress during these exercises is safety. Students should be padded up and instructors should be present during this type of training. It can be very dangerous, and serious injury can occur if the utmost care is not taken.

Again we present another example showcasing the caliber of individuals joining the ranks of World Dragon Kenpo Schools of Self Defense. Charles Humble will be headed home from Iraq in about a month.

Greetings Mr. Pfeiffer,

I am Charles Humble, and I am writing you from Lovely Iraq. I am in the Army serving over here for the past year.

I am looking forward to training in Dragon Kenpo. I have been an avid follower of martial arts since very young and have trained in several styles, but I have always had an intense interest in the science and precision of Kenpo. I have studied American Kenpo and attained the rank of Blue Belt. I want to study Dragon Kenpo... integrate it into my life, and eventually teach. I hope to also continue my study in American Kenpo. I want to be as well rounded and complete as I can.

I began my Martial arts training in Tae Kwon Do as a teenager. I stayed with it for about a year or so and attained the rank of green belt. When I went to college, I began to study Jeet Kune Do as self study. I wanted to train under an instructor, but the closest one was Gary Dill and he was too expensive and about three hours away. But I trained as best I could for about three or four years.

When I was twenty four... I entered the Marine Corps and trained in the combat hand to hand fighting system known as LINE training (Linear Infighting Neural Exercise). in seven years of service in the Marine Corps I became rated as Advanced.

Presently I serve in the Army as an infantryman and have trained for the last three years in Army Combatives. Really what it amounts to is a modified Brazilian Jiujitsu. Unfortunately the Army doesn't rate their soldiers in Combatives... we just train.

Hopefully this helps give you a background in what I've experienced over the years. I have a real deep desire to become the best Kenpo practitioner I can be and the best instructor I can be.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Sincerely,

Charles Humble

Charles,

First let me thank you for your service to our country, it is truely my honor to welcome you to your new school. For many student/instructor members just knowing they won't need to keep changing schools is it's own relief. Our members are encouraged to continue to learn from all available sources, this has given Dragon Kenpo it's strength and flexibility. With what I read of your history I would be surprised if you find anything really new to you or some great revelation. Dragon Kenpo has a focus on good basic techniques which your future students will be able to use if needed.

Reading your info and other data from your recent new membership it's quite apparent that you will qualify for advanced standing and I am issuing our Assistant Instructor Certificate which you can view and print in the secured members area under My Awards.

If you'd like to snail mail any certificates or other for your permanent record here at WDK use the address on the contact page at www.dragonkenp.us.

Please read the Text Lesson attached to the Intro clip on the first level and let me know if you have any questions.

Email me when your ready for access to the next technique group (Yellow Belt). As an assistant instructor you can advance to Orange Belt (2 levels above beginner) at an accellerated pace. Once you've been promoted to Orange Belt there would be 90 days time in rank before you may request advancement.

I tried the number you entered and got an answering machine. In case anyone was wondering who called. :)

Coach Ron Pfeiffer

The preparations are made, the students continue to practice and this Saturday should prove to be the best of our Annual events. We’ve had a hugh enrollment surge for the fall session and will be asking the YMCA to begin a waiting list for local lessons. Fortunately WDK on line faces no such limitations and we are experiencing ample growth in this area of Dragon Kenpo Karate studies.

All student/instructor members local or virtual are invited to participate in the day long program. Exams will begin at 9am and we have reserved the pool for 2pm and the Y is supplying us with a Life Guard. Dinner is at 5pm followed by Awards and Presentations.

Comparing Dragon Kenpo to Open Source Software by Rick Collette.
C
omparing Dragon Kenpo to Open Source Software.
Author: Rick Collette Date: 07/19/2005 In working with Dragon Kenpo,
something struck me: It is the Open Source system of the Martial Arts
world. So now, there are people who are asking "What is Open Source?", or
"You know you are a few sandwiches short of a picnic?", or "I get it.".
Now, I can't just say something like that and not offer my explanation.
NOTE: It is beyond the scope of this document to go into raw detail of
how things work, I am merely describing some things at a very basic
level to make a point. If you would like to discuss the finer points of
computing, please feel free to e-mail. And no, I won't fix your computer.
First, let me define "Source Code". Basically (and VERY basically), it
is the language that programmers use to write the programs you use
every day. They then "compile" this code into something your computer can
run, and something that you can use – such as a word processor, web
browser, etc. Typically this "source code" is a closely guarded secret, and
it is the crown jewels for any software company. Now, "Open Source" is
when that "source code" is freely given, and not only that, you are
encouraged to add onto it, fork it off into something different and new,
or just give back to the community from which you took it in the first
place. (For the actual definition of "Open Source" see:
http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php ). So what the bafoogles
does this have to do with Dragon Kenpo? Simple – we are given the basic
set of techniques (the "source code"), we are told to elaborate on it,
we are allowed (and even encouraged) to start our own Dojo's, training
sessions, or what have you, and we can commercialize (the "BSD"
variant) the system if we like, or we can take what we've added and give it
freely back to the community (the "GPL" variant). Naturally, for the less
experimental of us, we can keep to the given curriculum, and progress
in whichever established system we want. There is nothing at all wrong
with that, and it can be a lifelong journey – every bit as much as
embracing and extending into something different.

Student/Instructor Member Richard Shepard
Hello Coach Ron,
One of my martial role models is an internal martial
arts instructor in California named Tim Cartmell. You may or may not
have heard of him. He wrote a really great book title "Effortless Combat
Throws" that all martial artists should read. Anyway, I really like
this passage from his website and I wanted to suggest you include it in
the next edition of Slayer News.
"Everyone possesses an inborn ability to fight; it is a natural
reaction to threat or stress and requires no formal training. What, then,
distinguishes these random patterns of attack and defense which arise
spontaneously in the untrained from the actions and reactions of a trained
martial artist? The answer to this question lies in the trained
fighter's application of certain principles to the movements and strategies of
unarmed combat. These principles form the basis or "essence" of martial
art. It is because these principles are utilized that fighting is
elevated to the level of "art." In fact, it is the understanding and
application of basic natural principles, which allows mankind as a whole to
continuously improve and refine capabilities in any endeavor. Such
knowledge is made manifest in technique; technique, in turn, is based on the
understanding of natural principles. Technical application of natural
principles makes it possible for construction workers to build houses,
doctors to treat diseases and the weaker to overcome the stronger in a
fight."

Slayer News July 2005 About Dragon Kenpo Karate...

Welcome to the Birthday Edition.

In July 2004 after two months of working with our web development team World Dragon Kenpo began accepting student/instructor members. Some of the true supporters of Dragon Kenpo and video distance students joined right away. To date 45+ Instructor/Student members are accessing our online school and total registered members stand at over 150 . Of course it wasn’t World Dragon Kenpo those first few months, it was DragonKenpo.US and Wisconsin Dragon Kenpo. Soon it was obvious that the Dragon Kenpo Karate Academy (DKKA) program had a worldwide impact. However because of that impact today someone else will search "dragon kenpo" to see if the DKKA was back. Every time I answer a question about our association with "Hutchison Dragon Kenpo" I’m reminded of the responsibility involved in teaching and the feeling which I had when past instructors quit or a school closed. In the not too distant past there was doubt as to if or how a successor to the DKKA could emerge. Well the members have spoken and some of what they’re saying can be read in past newsletters. Over 60% of our members are former DKKA most of those choosing to adopt World Dragon Kenpo has the Home School.

I am very happy to announce that we are putting together a Advisory Group which we hope will be another useful resource for all our associated members.

The following question was sent in by one of our new Assistant Instructors. RP

This is an unimportant semantics question. But with "Asst
Instructor", and the fact that I was very proud of it, and told some
folks at work about it, they asked if I could be called "Sensei" now.
I just flatly said no. I'm just a color belt, and I'm still learning
the basics. What do you suggest?

No questions about our art are trivial to me, Mr. QuestionAskingMember, which is how I would address you if we were training. Instructors address each other as Mr. Mrs. or Miss. Less senior Instructors may choose to address the Lead Instructor as "Coach" as a show of respect but Mr. Mrs or Ms is acceptable. Junior students (not yet adult) address all instructors as Sir, Coach, Mr. Or Ms. InsertNameHere. Adult lessons don't always make use of this formal structure, however as you teach youth lessons the concept can spill over into the adult training. Normally they see it as setting a good example. So if we have some youngsters we're working with mixed with adults then I use the proper form in addressing the kids by their first names and the adults as Mr. Mrs. and Ms. The beginnings of things... Concise answers which make good common sense are important. This is how we do it in this school, you are of course free to select another method if this makes no sense to you or if you think speaking foreign languages is somehow important here. :) First off Sensei means teacher, it's very personal. With people at work until they are your students nothing has changed. Your not their teacher.. yet.

A common expression is "Just don't call me late for supper." maybe we should use that. RP :)

Here is our list of recently promoted local and distance student/instructors (some also hold Black Belt ranks). All members are reminded that promotion and advancement are not automatic and to contact Coach Pfeiffer for questions on your status.

About Dragon Kenpo Karate by Steve Amoia http://www.healinghq.com/Article257.phtml

There is a lot of good info on this Great Site.

In traditional martial arts study, belt levels begin at white, and progressively become darker to the rank of red, which signifies an instructor. A belt ranking in Dragon Kenpo refers to an exposure to various teachings and specific self-defense techniques; however, the ranking does not signify a mastery of the concepts. Dragon Kenpo is a flexible self-defense system that challenges the mind and body, and encourages each student to master himself.

Kenpo, which derives from the Japanese word Kempo, means Law of the Fist. Dragon Kenpo traces its roots from the original Kenpo, which originated in the Shaolin monasteries of Northern China. Kenpo was brought to Japan from China in the 17th century. After many modifications, the martial art became known as Kosho ryu Kempo, or the Old Pine Tree school. Most modern forms of Kenpo trace their roots to this school. In 1916, a native of Hawaii, James Mitose, was sent by his parents to study the ancestral arts of self-defense. He studied for fifteen years in Kyushu, Japan, and then returned to Hawaii to share his knowledge and wisdom. In 1936, Mr. Mitose opened his first dojo, or training facility, in Honolulu. He named his dojo the "Official Self-Defense Club."

One of Mr. Mitose's students was William K.S. Chow, who had studied kung fu for several years. Mr. Chow drew upon his previous kung fu teachings, along with the new knowledge gained from Mr. Mitose, to form a new art called Kara-Ho Kenpo. In 1949, Mr. Chow opened his first dojo at a local YMCA. To reinforce the unique nature of his teachings, he called his art "Kenpo" Karate, which represented a departure from the accepted spelling of the word "Kempo."

It was at Mr. Chow's dojo where a young man would study and become one of the most significant proponents of Kenpo. In 1954, Mr. Edmund Parker earned his black belt in Kara-Ho Kenpo. Mr. Parker introduced many innovations to the art, and later taught celebrities such as Elvis Presley. His teachings are referred to as Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate.

Dragon Kenpo was founded in 1992 by Mr. Ed Hutchison, and was recognized by the United Kenpo Karate Association. Mr. Hutchison, who was a former police officer, holds a 4th degree black belt in American Kenpo, along with a Red Sash in Shaolin Kung Fu. He produced and promoted a home study video tape series of his self-defense system. This video tape series was analyzed in a detailed research study in 1997 by Professor Bobby Newman of Queens College. Dr. Newman concluded that "… The current results indicate that subjects who study well-made martial arts instruction tapes will be able to learn the techniques as efficiently as from an instructor."

Kenpo is a Do, which in Buddhist Zen teachings represents a path towards enlightenment. Kenpo is a method of self-defense, but more importantly, it is an art that centralizes the body with the mind. Those who study the art of kenpo not only become masters of fighting, but also masters of themselves.

Dragon Kenpo builds upon Mr. Ed Parker's tailoring principle, which states that a student learns by their own abilities. In essence, every student creates their own unique art form. However, Dragon Kenpo strives to enhance the talents of each student, and to expand their personal development.

World Dragon Member Profile.

Welcome to Ed DellaCroce. As yet another example of one of our exceptional members, Ed has accepted appointment to the post of N.C. State Director and as such provided this profile at my request. Director DellaCroces 8hr. DK Street Defense may become a future online and local course offering!

A Martial Arts Journey... Continues...

My first introduction to Martial Arts began in 1974. For three months I trained in the art of Shotokan Karate. The discipline I was taught prepared me for a life change in the U.S. Air Force. Basic training proved to be a challenge for a stubborn independent spirited young man. Growing up North, in a city environment, I had developed an attitude of defiance. For me Karate discipline laid out a solid foundation, which would later become my essence in adult life.

My primary job in the Military became Law Enforcement. This career also opened a door for exposure to various in-service tactical training classes.
While stationed in North Carolina I began Shaolin Kenpo Karate. Later, transferring to Korea I studied Kuk Sool Won (Hapkido Karate). After one year I had a background to initiate my own self-continued study program, I then I returned to North Carolina. In 1985, while in the Military, I graduated from a Civilian Police Academy. I earned my certification as a Deputy Sheriff. I secured part time employment at our county sheriff’s office with the Warrant Squad. Once retiring from the Military, in 1994, my new full time job was employment as a Deputy Sheriff. My patrol area was the county and the inner city housing projects for a total of twelve years.
After years of dealing with combative arrestees I realized that survival on the street is not just your physical appearance, but also your attitude. You must be able to adapt to your surroundings. Keep your inner fear well concealed. Stay focused under pressure. Rehearse in your mind daily that you will survive any street situation you encounter.
Discovering Dragon Kenpo Karate, in 1998, a new door opened for me. I found an art to fill the gap, which I felt traditional karate could not provide. Dragon Kenpo outlined a realistic street level defense adaptable to stressful attacks.
Over the years I have incorporated my exposure to Korean Hapkido, Jujitsu, Judo and Aikido. In 2000 I attained my Dragon Kenpo Karate First Degree Black Belt. My Second Degree belt followed in 2002. As I expanded my defensive knowledge I began to share it with my friends.
Today I continue to work as a full time Law Enforcement Officer, with more than thirty years combined service. I have developed and teach a style of Dragon Kenpo Street Defense. My course is an eight-hour class on realistic defensive techniques. One tactic may start out with Karate, then switch to a Jujitsu move and so forth.
The end results of the program are to teach an average person to defend him or herself against a personal attack. Like Dragon Kenpo the techniques can disable an attacker to allow escape, or meet new attacks. I acquire new techniques often by watching Police training films, or attending continuing education classes on self-defense.
As members of World Dragon Kenpo Karate we are limited only by our own initiative. "SURVIVAL MUST NOT BE JUST A WORD, BUT ALSO A WAY OF LIFE."

Rick has created an excellent resource and point of local contact towards the development of a local training group. Kudos Rick and Team Arizona!

Best Wishes to our friend, student and now soldier Brian Marty. His letter indicates things are well as he prepares for AIT after basic. His short term goal being Ranger School. We have every confidence in Brian. Brian began training in Dragon Kenpo almost 2 yrs ago. After 10 years in sport TKD Mr. Marty became interested in the "take off the gloves" training and kenpo in particular. While he trained with us he continued to compete in his tkd schools program. His concentration as a student and desire to learn the control movements and disabling breaks of our program made Brian an excellent learner who challenged the techniques and earned his Green Belt. I will pass along any messages as I will be writing Brian soon.

As we approach our one year anniversary there have been attempts by a few people to define the World Dragon Kenpo method in their own terms.  A difficult task even for those closest to our program. Our world wide school exists, not to define the member/student or Dragon Kenpo but to provide a format from which the member/student may choose to define what dragon kenpo means to them personally. Labels as we’ve seen time and again fix a limiting definition hiding the possibilities behind needless complication. As we’ve seen over the past year good students/members ask questions and expect direct and concise answers.  We've been described as the next evolution in self defense and personal safety training. With over 200 video technique and fitness clips, promotion awards download right to your computer and our attention to individual needs make this distance learning experience second to none. Instructors of many styles have affiliated with the World Dragon Kenpo Group and are actively teaching and promoting the Art of Dragon Kenpo. Take a minute and read the News link at www.dragonkenpo.us to see what our members have to say. Here are a few bits that our members have sent.

Coach Pfeiffer,

I received the patches and certificates. I was really impressed. They are much higher quality than most I have seen. The heavy stock paper is both effective for presentation and practical from the perspective of minimizing shipping damage. The seal with the ribbon adds a professional touch; not to be critical, but the seal on that Ed Hutchison used was pretty tacky. The colors on the patches are bright, yet not overwhelming. I like the way the design is unique yet incorporates the traditional kenpo symbol. Great job!

Coach,

Michelle (my wife) is actually excited about the DK program. We'll probably get her on her own account with the website, she will want to take her own notes and stuff.

Coach,

I study the videos carefully, then not watch them for a few weeks. I like to test my retention rate. Your videos are easy to follow, your varied angles are a plus. Soon I will purchase my World Dragon Kenpo patches from you. I will also adopt you as my in-service trainer coach. My next step is to purchase a Black Gi and put my White one away. I have my World Black Belt Bureau patches on it.

Coach,

One of my escapes from the side choke hold is:

1. Tighten your neck muscles to reduce the effect, turn your neck inward towards the chest of the person and tuck your chin to your chest.

2. If chocked on the left side of the attacker I place my left hand behind the attackers left knee and cup my hand behind the knee cap

3. I reach up and place my right hand, palm side against attackers forehead.

4. Simultaneously I grab and lift the attackers leg and push backwards on his forehead. The attacker will be flipped over backward and slammed into the ground. You can use any other move to continue attacking, or run.

ESSAY CONTEST

All serious student/instructor members should be submitting entries in our contest and should have them in by July 7th. This doesn’t need to be a stunning revelation or a book just thoughtful consideration of what you see as important in your martial arts journey.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson to learn is that in Karate, as in life, one gets out of it exactly what is put into it.

WHY I DO DRAGON KENPO by

Thor Sulland, Co-Director Dragon Kenpo Europe

Great thanks mate, also I am very happy to hear that our art is rapidly becoming a success. I am in this whatever happens, But I suspect that you already know that. My dojo is coming on well I have a small but very loyal group of students and I have also recruited some traditional karateka and kickboxers they came to me and asked me to show them how DK differs form their styles. So, I had them do their best against me and nothing worked. Now they are my loyal students "he he!". I will be grading them all for yellow belt level in 2 - 3 weeks also I may be opening another dojo so, together we will bring Dragon kenpo the recognition it deserves. As for "why" I do DK, It is a simple answer, I have cross trained in several arts at a time for 16 years now and I love what I do. But when all of the bollocks is stripped away there are very few arts that cut it. I am from a rough area originally so for many years I had to "road test" much of what I do. I quickly became able to discern what worked and what did not. Those that did not work were removed from my defensive arsenal and replaced with arts that did. Dk is one of the arts that I am happy to say did work well for me on many occasions. I would not teach a self defense system to anyone, unless I was certain that it did work. I have never been the type of person to look for trouble, but I did spend most of my life in an area of high unemployment where a lot of violence occurs. So a good level of defensive skill was essential. I hope this sheds some light on my original motives, Now my motives are different. The arts have given me discipline, peace of mind and a good way of life.

Best wishes my friend,

Thor Sulland

REMINDER; Register Now for Karate Kamp June 17th 18th & 19th 2005 @Wisconsin Dells!!!!

Recently promoted Black Belt Bill Torres has been a student of DK for quite some time before we started our new web site. Here is his message after receiving his promotion and my request for something for the Slayer.

Coach,

Again as you can see, there are some differences, but this is one of the reasons I am studying the Dragon Kenpo Methods, and also try to instill this upon my Black Belts. Basically one needs to know there is no one perfect system or style, but what one does with the system or style that they are learning.

I would like to give a brief background on myself and my Club.

I started Karate when I was 10. I received my 1st Dg. Black Belt from my first instructor at 13, then joined a more traditional school, that was teaching Isshinryu, I stayed with this through High School reaching Brown Belt. My first instructor had promoted me to 2nd Dg. Black Belt by this time.

After High school I joined the Army Reserves, and had many Instructors of various Skills, but came across the Depasquale's here in north jersey, There was my introduction to Ju-Jutsu, this was around 1989. From this my first instructor moved to Fla. but had created a group called Karate Schools of America, so those working Independently could further their rank. With the influences of Ju-Jutsu Master Kyle promoted me to 3rd Dg. Black Belt. Around 1991 I came across Kenpo in General and found it different from what I was doing, but without giving up on my root foundation, I started to study Kenpo methods, upon learning of Dragon Kenpo, I bought into the Video Series, but only got to the 3rd Dg. Brown Belt, when they shut down. Then a few years later. I met up with Coach Pfeiffer online, and resumed my Dragon Kenpo Studies, where I found that with the 1 to 1 contact either by phone or E-mail, was a big improvement on understanding the material that I was doing. Since this time I have also started a course on what I call Modern Kenpo Karate, which has influences from the White Dragon Kenpo, from the past Al Farnsworth. Which I have reach 1st Dg. Black Belt in.

I started my club in 1991 at first teaching a group of kids at the local 4H, then moving to paying members in my friends local garage. within a couple of years I rented a suite in a building giving me access to the common area, that we use at night. we have about a dozen or so members at any given time, some more, some less, depending on the time of year. I work full time as an EMT at JFK Medical Center in Edison NJ, as well as Volunteer with my local Rescue Squad. I like the more personal contact I have with my students in a smaller class setting.

To Date the following ranks attained

The System in which I have founded is called

SHI-STAR SELF DEFENSE- the styles that fall under that

1) American Karate- 6th Dg. Black Belt, Mar. 2003

2) Combat Karate- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Apr. 2004

3) Combat Ju-Jutsu- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Apr. 2004

4) Combat Aikido- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Apr. 2004 #2,#3,#4 was attained as Combined Combat KaraKidoJutsu.

5) Dragon Kenpo- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Mar. 2005

6) Modern Kenpo- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Mar. 2005

7) American Stick Fighting- 1st Dg. Black Belt, Mar. 2005

8) Renzoku Jiu-Jitsu- Green Belt, Apr. 2002

9) American Ninpo Taijutsu- Working on my Yellow Belt 9th KYU, test date Jun. 2005

This is the 9 Styles that make up the Shi-Star Self Defense System.

As a Student one learns American Karate which is a blend of Okinawin Karate, Ju-Jutsu, and Kenpo.

When a student reaches Black Belt, we then teach them, Dragon Kenpo, Combat Ju-Jutsu, Combat Karate, and Combat Aikido. This takes them to 5th Dg. Black Belt, at which time the student including myself, learns Modern Kenpo, and Renzouku Jiu-Jitsu. The Stick Fighting and Ninpo Taijutsu class are separate classes and not required ranking classes, but are separate.

GREAT JOB EVERYONE! April 2nd Members of the Geneva Lakes Family YMCA Self Defense Club participated the the "Y’s" Healthly Kids Day. By using demonstrations of our training we helped support an important Community Event and raised the awarness and interest in our art of Dragon Kenpo. My personal thanks to all attending members. You have earned your "demo team" patch!

They that have power to hurt and will do none,
That do not do the thing they most do show,
Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,
Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow,

They rightly do inherit heaven's graces
And husband nature's riches from expense;
They are the lords and owners of their faces,
Others but stewards of their excellence.

Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.

My name is Ralph Trejo, I reside in Corpus Christi Texas. I hold a samdan 3rd rank in the art of TaeKwonDo. I have also trained extensively in hand to hand combat. I taught (for free) a little over 7 years at a local recreation center, Unfortunately, due to working circumstances, I have been un able to teach for the past 2 years. However, I have moved into a career in teaching and find ample time to re conduct my teachings. I am impressed with the Virtual Dragon Kempo training system.
I look forward to the instruction of Mr. Pfeiffer, he truly is a
pioneer. Good luck to all students, I am honored to be a part of your organization. Namaste, Ralph Trejo

Thanks for the thumbs up Ralph.  Although a number of our members are new to self defense many are black belts with real goals and drive.  We'll do our part to work towards continuous improvement for all our members, just one of our GOALS.

about Dragon Kenpo Karate

Spring can’t get here fast enough! Welcome to our latest E-Mag, we have a couple interesting announcements, a letter of commentary from a past member of the DKKA (Dragon Kenpo Karate Academy) and a bunch of Q&A. Remember anyone can submit their school event, story, or other info just email us. Also here is our monthly reminder to contact Coach Pfeiffer at wi_ron@yahoo.com for information about your training, to update/add your picture, address (we need your correct address) or login info. Also email for instructor development, promotions/advancement and if your having difficulty accessing the lessons. :) For those interested in such things our www.DragonKenpo.US site continues to improve, members can now visit the new white belt techniques by clicking the drop-down next to their current rank and selecting "None".

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1st Quarter Exams are being held at the Geneva Lakes Family YMCA on Saturday March 12th starting at 10am in the small gym. No one is required to test for rank and may choose to wait but everyone is expected to attend exams to get in an extra workout, support your training partners and school. Assistant Instructors are advised to arrive early. Makeup exams will be held the following week after your class.

We are very pleased to announce that our organization, World Dragon Kenpo, has been selected to sanction the training at Ivy Tech in Indiana. The program instructor, Indiana State Director Jim Patus, can be contacted at jpatus@thepoint.net for information about this Adult Continuing Education Course. We consider this a great honor and will serve diligently in this new role. Thanks Jim and Ivy Tech!

A number of our members have assumed Director positions for the state/countrys where they live.  If you are interested in a leadership position with our school let us know about it.  There will be an announcement concerning our very active membership and it's leadership in the next e-mag.

It's not the critic who counts, but the individual who is in the arena striving.

CPR/AED

Sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the CPR/AED training in Feb. If you’ve already done this training look in to getting a refresher because the recommendations for applying CPR have changed in the last couple of years. We will be adding a category "CPR" to the white belt level which will include a CPR review. This is not a substitute for taking a Red Cross or American Heart Association certified course. It’s provided as a service to those who would like to refresh their CPR/AED training.

Q&A Student Questions and the Coaches Answers

Q. I have been doing karate in many different styles before this. Kickboxing,
muay thai, and I am a black belt in jiu jitsu I was wondering if I can
advance in rank before the recommended date and do I have to send in a tape
or can I just tell you when I feel I am ready to advance thank you

A. Distance learning members may advance more quickly if you choose by ordering a Promotion Request through the Member>Online Store and sending in a vhs tape of your demonstration to the address on the contact page after at least 30 days of training. This is possible because students may access lessons 24/7 instead of only 3 or 4 times per week. Otherwise to save money, I recommend you use the Time in Rank promotion after 90 day time in rank (standard time between tests in many schools). This can be done up until your Black Belt test which must be done on tape or in person to receive promotion at the ranks of BB and above. Advancing quickly isn't as important as being patient and taking your time for a quality result. In our school many students choose the option of  90 days Time in Rank mostly due to personal choice or lack of a camera.

Q. What is the "My Messages" section normally used for?

A. I've placed the following message there to answer this question;

Mar,05,05

What's this for?

Hi,

This communication feature is something we'll be working with more in the future. For Q&A read our very long News page or Contact Coach Ron Pfeiffer at 262-903-7012 or wi_ron@yahoo.com.

Q. How are testing videos normally submitted?

A. Generally distance learning student exam videos are submitted by postal mail at the Black Belt levels and above on a vhs or 8mm tape. Students in other countries who use the PAL instead of NTSC standard must pay a conversion fee so we can have the tape converted.  Some online students may prefer, at their option, to order a promotion request from the Online Store and send an exam video for every rank (they receive back a signed certificate and have their exam graded). Although most due to personal choice or the difficultly in access/using to a video camera are promoted through Time in Rank which is 90 days per level.

Q. Why does "My Profile" say that my current rank is "Yellow Belt," although the only thing in "My Awards" section is an "Enrollment" certificate, and I have not submitted any testing material or videos yet?

A. Our program isn't one size fits all style of training so depending on the individual their rank may be adjusted. In our email conversations I have determined that your previous exposure to DK/martial arts make you eligible for Advanced Standing which means you begin up two levels from the beginner. Also your Yellow Belt and Assistant Instructor Awards should be available at this time. Be sure to check the drop-down arrow next to your rank to see the lower rank techniques and to read the "view text lesson" from the first white belt clip (this new technique group was just added).

Q. Why does it appear that your Orange Belt assistant, and you, are leaning back slightly, with a slightly straightened front leg, while in the 'fighting stance'?

A. The proper body position should have you centered (not leaning back or forward) with the front knee slightly bent. Some of that (but not all) could be the camera angle. As we continue to reshoot and replace clips that are not exactly displaying the techniques the way we want them, we've simply explained that if a body position seems unnatural or could be improved do it. The techniques explained throughout the training are guides to help the student discover how to make them work best for each student/instructor.

Q. Why do you hold your fist against your face while in your 'fighting stance' while the demonstrator of the "Warmupbeginer" clips holds his hands away from his face and body?

A. As in an earlier question here it is a slight difference of style. I encourage a boxing type stance for our beginner students, as they become more advanced the choices for exact hand position become a matter of personal preference. Personally I like to keep my stance tight, elbows in.

Q. Is it possible to view some of your students best, worst, and average testing videos as an example of your standards for testing?

A. Not yet, we hope to offer this in the future (our online program isn't a year old yet) with the permission of the examining student/instructor. The exams submitted by those who intend to teach should reflext the ideas/methods which you personally would like to have your students do, so if your testing of students would grade the warmup, then demonstrate it, if you would interview the students then include such on your exam tape. We want to teach our members to think for themselves and continue to develop as martial artists so flexibility is built into the program.

Q. How many students are currently enrolled in your distance learning program?

A. About 35. (3/3/05)

Q. How many people have you promoted to Black Belt in Dragon Kenpo?

A. So far 3 local students and 4 distance learning members. However that is going to change dramatically over the next few years.

Q. Do you accept videos for distance testing at the rank of Black Belt?

A. Yes, but some of our members have indicated a willingness to travel here to test at our Annual Fall Exams and Banquet in WI. Like in previous question promotion to Black Belt by either video or in person is required above the color belt ranks.

Q. Do you have a full time job outside of teaching Dragon Kenpo at the Y?

A. Yes, I work the night shift at a factory where I've been employed for nearly 20 years. I could work the day shift however none of this would be possible on that schedule. I'm a Union Steward and Safety Committee Member on the job as well. Also I've been married to the love of my life for the past 22 years and we're raising teenagers! So between all that and teaching at the YMCA 3 days per week, I administrate, provide content and trouble shoot for our online school.

Coach, Thank you again for your complete and informative answers. I will continue to bombard you with more, and pick your brain, if you do not mind. You may certainly use my questions and your responses in our newsletter, although I would request or recommend that they are not directly attributed to me, but to one of "our students." Thank you. I'd like to hope that I can, now, and in the future, influence the remaining and growing DK community and help improve our organization, system, and reputation. Thank you,

Judo and Psycho-Physical Unity

The following letter is used with the permission of the author and reflects in my opinion the experience of more than a few of our members.

Coach,

I'm enjoying our ongoing dialog, and your speedy and informative replies. I plan to continue our correspondence. If you don't object, I plan to share some of my experience, thoughts, ideas, insights, and opinions, on DK, the future of DK, and your school. When it comes to Dragon Kenpo, I constantly refer back to the original purpose and concept. Ed Hutchinson set out to prove a point or to test a theory in an experiment. He set out to answer the question of whether or not someone could learn or absorb a physical skill, namely martial arts / self-defense, to any degree of proficiency, utilizing only distance learning. This is similar to the concept American Kenpo was playing with immediately prior to Ed Parker's untimely death. The proposal was put forth and the 'Americans' considered opening a chain of schools coast to coast with step by step video instruction by Edmund Parker. The idea was that students would visit their Kenpo Dojo and watch a series of video tapes of Ed Parker and follow along level by level as they progressed through the system. The idea was quickly thrown away, along with the idea of producing "The Ed Parker Story." To the best of my knowledge it was never even attempted. With this in mind, I think you have come the closest to the original intent of DK, with the establishment of your online dojo. I understand the original theory and intent that promotion, accreditation, and rank would be granted and based on "exposure to training," but I do believe that a little more is required to avoid being labeled or becoming a mail order sham scam. I think we need a way to acknowledge or identify those who have some knowledge and skill, and to recognize those who have worked hard to progress and develop within this system, or to separate them from the 'time in rank' - 'exposure to training' group. If we offer both options, we are bound to attract a larger and better skilled group of hard working martial artists. I am not interested in running a distance learning school or website myself, but I think your's is the closest in DK to date, to what I'm suggesting. Your interaction with students, beit via videos, emails, or phone calls, can at the very least, ensure some level of understanding, constant improvement, motivation, and monitor progress, interest, and dedication. With all that in mind, I do not have any suggestions outside of what you are doing so far. As I've said before, I think you're on the mark with DK thus far. Looking back, I have visited or passed by your website many times since it's inception. I 'enrolled' or registered with your site several months before I 'joined.' The reason I finally came over is because I was hoping that I could elevate Dragon Kenpo and my and all of our credence as DK martial artists, by being more closely affiliated with quality DK martial arts, quality DK martial artists, and a quality DK martial arts organization / dojo. I originally began my DK training years ago, like many others, under Ed Hutchinson in the 'Black Belt/Red Belt-Instructor' distance/home study course. I was also eventually granted a black belt by DK Video Teacher #1 Name Deleted, and a 2nd Degree by Name Deleted#2. #1 was almost impossible to contact, was evasive on many questions, and seemed more interested in self-promotion and money making. #2 seemed like a slightly more skilled martial artist, was more interactive, but was slow to interact and provided limited guidance. #2 also changed a good deal of the Hutchinson material, some for the better, and some simply by interpretation. #2 also eliminated the 'Red Belt - Instructor' rank and the instructor-warmup/stretching techniques. Both maintained the distance learning approach, the 'exposure to training' theory, and video testing. I eventually moved over to your website/organization because of the multitude of resources, the close contact and accessibility, and the professional appearance and structure. I'm looking forward to a good, long, and close relationship, and continued development through your website. I'll give you some of my ideas or opinions on your website, and distance learning program, over time, in additional emails. I will give you a little more on my martial arts background in another email. Thank you again,

About Dragon Kenpo

Welcome new (and not so new) Registered and Student/Instructor members to another edition of our Dragon Kenpo newsletter. As per a number of member requests, at Martial TV in the members area we will be adding text lessons to most of the self defense clips. This upgrade in service will add an important tool to the members area.

Here’s a tip for printing awards and certificates, select the smaller text size (view) in your browser window so the page formats properly.

In another important announcement we have several members under scholarship in our program. There is no reason for a person to be unable to access the lessons if the circumstances make the tuition cost out of reach.

If you feel you qualify for reduced cost/no cost scholarship with our school or know of someone who does contact us.

SHOW PEOPLE WHAT YOU DO

We recently received a thank you note from a group for whom we demonstrated some self defense, it reads as follows;

On behalf of the Eagle Lioness Club, we would like to thank you for an excellent presentation. It was well prepared, informative and very interesting. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to enlighten us. Glad you could stay for dessert! The Eagle Lioness Club of Wisconsin

Thanks to the students who participated in the demo and helped eat the many different desserts! See Coach Pfeiffer for your demo team patch.

DRAGONKENPO.US Q&A

A special welcome to Steve Amoia. With his permission in this newsletter we've included some of his questions and comments.

Q. Would I be able to access the online techniques via a basic dial-up connection? I was able to view your great demonstration with the Styx...

A. Thanks Steve, and yes it works with dial up. Use the download time to practice, warmup or writing in your training log.

Q. Also, about how much time do you prefer for the student to spend in a belt level before exposure to the next series of techniques?

A. Good question! Each students needs are different. For new martial artists 90 days time in rank is the norm. Here at our local school exams are held quarterly and all are invited. Experienced members are given due consideration.

Q. One issue I had with Mr. Hutchison was that he didn't offer video analysis as you and others do. I felt comfortable with the first few tapes. After that, not as much. The techniques, at least for me, seemed to require analysis for proper execution. I also didn't agree with showing someone how to disarm a gun. And being a police officer, I thought that he was taking a risk to show that. But he had the red sash; not I...

A. This is a theme, without good feedback the experience for many isn't very effective. It's just one thing we try to do better. As for gun defenses I agree. The thought there was, you feel your going to be shot anyway,it's better to go down trying. This much I know for sure, our students do have fun with it! Also it serves to get them thinking about how they might respond. As with the knife and club techniques students are taught they might get cut, hit or shot. Maybe some of our members/visitors would like to address this topic...

I am honored to be a part of your program, and looking forward to resume my study of the art of Dragon Kenpo.

Once Again, Welcome to your new school Steve!

Speeking as a Black Belt Instructor already, I understand how important it is to
get what you are trying to teach across to those studying the tapes. The fact that
you have open communication with members helps alot. I really feel that Dragon Kenpo
has helped me to diversify my system as a whole, as I make Dragon Kenpo one of the
requirements for my Black Belts. This helps for them to learn a variety of skills

the ability to view more techniques?"

Yes. Some of our students who hold black belts in other styles have been involved in
Advanced Placement.  Members of high rank (such as Bill above) who would like
to disscuss tailoring the program need only contact Coach Pfeiffer for more
information usually discussions are by phone.  Persons qualifiying for advanced
placement to yellow belt usually have at least 1yr. previous training.

coach Ron,
I have just read in the slayer news that rank can be achieved faster by
sending in a video with a fee? I was wondering if you could send me
some
info on this, like how the video should look like, do the techniqes
need to
be explained? Not that im ready, just curious.
thanks

Answer,
Yes, if you choose to send in a video tape of your demonstsration
of the techniques for promotion to the next level with an exam fee
of $20 you get your work graded and receive a full size, signed
certificate of rank.  Show your practice with several partners
and receive Assistant Instructor Status.  The video exam should
show you demonstrating each technique a number of times from at
least two angles (i.e. from front and side).
Email your intention to test after at least 30 days time in
grade and we'll proceed from there.  Since you can access your
instructor daily not just 2 or 3 time a week it's possible for
some to advance more quickly.

Welcome to our new registered members and our new Student/Instructor Members!  Surprise!!  We have some info and items of interest from our members this month. Way to go everyone!

Reminder.  As always if your not at the proper rank or if there are issues with your membership contact Coach Pfeiffer at wi_ron@yahoo.com.  Those of you distance learning who have completed 90 days at your current color belt rank need to request promotion so you can access the next rank level techniques.  All Student/Instructor members should now be able to print out Enrollment, Rank and Status (i.e. assistant instructor, instructor, school charters) certificates directly from the “My Awards“ link.  The problem with an unusual blank field should be solved. Also for our higher ranked students and instructors, incorrect clips that were in 2nd Brown have been removed and are being replaced with the proper technique clips shortly (schedualed for tomorrow morning).   There was a request to make this a weekly newsletter... since currently we have a staff of one (me) monthly newletters will be the norm (sorry).

I think this is my new favorite as well!

The following message was received 11/7/04.  Afterwards during our phone conversation I was told I should be charging a lot more! ;o)

Coach Pfeiffer,

Just a note of thanks for your program.  With Jacob and I being able to spend less time together, we find that our Dragon Kenpo has become more and more important to us.  We are working independently right now and hope to get back together in December and have some intensive practice and review sessions with the techniques we have been working individually.  Jacob's mom is helping out as his training partner and I am relying on some of my old Shotokan friends to work with me occasionally.  We lost our "dojo", a basement in one of the buildings at the college; it is now being used as a storage area for the child care facility.  Indoor space at the college is pretty tight right now but I'm looking around town for a place we might be able to use for practice.  As soon as I can come up with
a place, we will be joined by a few others:  One of the instructors at Ivy Tech who used to do Shotokan with us is interested in joining us in practice sessions, as is the AV guy at Ivy Tech who has had a little Aikido training, and his wife who has a yellow in RyuKyu Kenpo.  These folks just surfaced without my solicitation; they found out what Jacob and I were doing and asked if they could join in. They all say they are not interested in rank, just practice; nevertheless, I am trying to encourage them to join the DK distance training.  If they were all part of Dragon Kenpo then that would give us some rationale for a "curriculum"; that was the biggest problem with all the martial arts training that I have been involved with (except Kodokan Judo) prior to your program.  It looks like Fridays are going to be the only day we can get everybody together, so with practice only once a week I anticipate it will go pretty slowly for the group.  Anyone working with us will get a big dose of kata; with the emphasis on quality, not quantity.  We plan to continue working on our blue techniques outside the group.

Jacob set up a web page that is rather primitive but has some photos you may be interested in.  http://www.xlix.net/dk/ .  Feel free to use the photos for anything you might wish.  (Obviously they could use some reduction and cropping.)  Thanks for having such a great program!

Work is proceeding on the video clips which we are adding to our members area.  As before let me remind anyone who needs to be upgraded to the next lesson level that if your not on the right rank or have some other access trouble to email me at wi_ron@yahoo.com or Robert at support@championsway.com
Thought some of you might like to know the process we go through to put the clip on line for our school.  There are a few steps.  1. Film it 2. Edit into 3 to 7 minute clips  3. Encode for Media Player  4. Upload to site  5. Assign to Rank and Catagory.  As you can imagine each of these steps involves a number of other steps so the process of uploading a half a dozen clips for low and high speed can take hours!  Things will speed up as we get a little better with time.

Our Rank Exams and Banquet were a great success.  The Wet and Wild work out was mostly a fun time splashing around.  The lifeguard told us that this was the best behaved group of youngsters she had ever seen!
The evening banquet was capped with Promotions and Awards for our students.  Two of our new Black Belts shared their thought on what it meant to them to become a Black Belt.

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children.
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends,
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition.
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This it to have succeeded.

Our Exams and Banquet on Sept 25 is all set to go! Dragon Kenpo students, parents and assistant instructors have all been preparing for a day of testing, fun and food (It's a Pig Roast!!).

About 30 students total are registered for testing including makeup exams and retakes. Black Belt Candidates will report at their schedualed times on friday. Candidates will present themselves for about 1hr of testing and will need to bring a copy of their first aid certification, 500 word essay and three ring binder with notes.

All other students will report for check-in and warmup at 9 am Sat. with exams to follow. Make-up exams and retakes will be held the following friday beginning at 6pm.

Three types of members receive these messages, they are;

1. Registered Members. Everyone's in this first group, it's where some people stay for awhile to see if this is The Real Deal and where some just want to show their support (thanks sis) for our project. Registered Members may email wi_ron@yahoo.com for information on receiving our new DragonKenpo.US Registered Member Certificate. Although you don't need to hold rank in a martial art to be a Registered Member those of you who have certificates of rank in Dragon Kenpo or another style and submit a certificate of rank will have that achievement recognized. Contact Coach Pfeiffer to become a Student/Instructor Member of DragonKenpo.US.

2. Local Students. Since DragonKenpo.US is our main resource for students and instructors not at class, being registered keeps members and their families (usually Mom) appraised of what's going on. Local Students can also be in the next group.

3. Student/Instructor Members.  Members receive a Certificate of Enrollment which is printed out from the Awards link in the members area. These local/distance learning members receive the highest level of access to DragonKenpo.US's growing list of techniques and training clips in addition to email and phone consultation. Promotion and advancement for distance color belts may be accomplished in either of two ways. First after completing 90 days time in rank a color belt may request upgrade to the next rank. There would be no test fee however the student could order a current certificate of rank if they wish. Alternatively, students who wish to progress faster may submit a video exam with the $20 (2005) Exam Fee. Student members as well as our Instructors and Registered Members are invited to submit video for inclusion in our collection. All Black Belt/ Instructor promotions will be done in person if possible or by video if needed. Candidates contact Coach Pfeiffer well in advance so they will be prepared for success.
Important Note.  Student/Instructor Members who are not able to access the correct video training for their rank level need to email Coach Pfeiffer at wi_ron@yahoo.com, it takes about 2 minutes to fix. Also we now have more room on the notes page in the members area. We can all thank Black Belt Randy Hall from TX for his request and our programmers for their quick action. Those who've had trouble signing up can email support@championsway.com, Robert's our guy for trouble shooting. He's said that some persons computer settings might have to be adjusted for proper but still secure use.

We continue to add clips (brown levels) and improve the functionality of DragonKenpo.US.  The following is a number of comments from parents and students.  I would like to thank them for their thoughts.

Coach Ron Pfeiffer

If you are looking for self-improvement ideas, I highly recommend training in the Wisconsin Dragon Kenpo System. I have achieved levels of fitness, strength, focus and self-confidence through my training that I would have never imagined possible. I encouraged my son to train so he could have an opportunity to develop these qualities at a young age which will benefit him as he matures into a young man.

Joe Chambers

Asst. Instructor

1st Degree Brown Belt

The karate classes serve the help our son with focus and body coordinating. It is also fun.

Sara S.

Working out together has created a stronger bond between myself and my son. We both have found new respect and understanding of each other. I highly recommend the classes.

Delano Lucas

My son has been in karate for one year. When he started, he had trouble focusing and concentrating in school. Now a year later he has improved a lot. His teacher has make the comment that he has much better focus and is very pleased.

Wendy Mueller

Mother of an eight year old

My son loves coming to class. He talks about karate all the time.

Dillon S.

Karate has given Mitchell a sence of confidence that he never had before. He is now able to work through situations that frustrated him without losing his composure. He has really taken to heart "self-control." Mitchell takes karate seriously and it has become an important part of his life.

Chris Stedman

Our two boys have benefitted from karate in different ways. Joseph, our athlete, has gained in strength, quickness and balance. Jamie, our non-athlete, has certainly also gained in strength, but more importantly karate has improved his self discipline and sense of self-worth. We parents are especially appreciative of Mr. Pfeiffer’s emphasis on responsibility, and insistence that the boys be contributing members of the family.

Steve & Cathleen Ahlgren

Alex enjoys karate & has really worked hard to get to his probationary purple. As a parent, I like the commitment this program has made towards pride in our country through respect to our flag. I also like the emphasis placed on family & education.

Sandy Kulik

My daughter and I have enjoyed taking karate classes together over the past year. I enjoy having an activity we can work on together. I know we both have benefitted physically and mentally from the experience. Mr. Pfeiffer and co-teachers do an excellent job and I look forward to continuing karate in the future.

That's me on the right side in the black shirt, to my right is my daughter Stephanie and son Ronnie. These are the parents and students who spent the whole weekend at Karate Kamp 2003.  The flag you see was donated by the State of WI and was retired honorably that evening in the camp fire along with a very tattered flag from the YMCA..

All the kids and some of the adults in the picture above testing for rank and/or participated in demonstrations.

6/4/04 Those of you waiting on the virtual training will be glad to know that about 60 clips have been uploaded and very soon we will have our Grand Opening!

If you know someone who's testing for rank promotion be sure to encourage their best effort.  Offer to review techniques or hold a target for striking practice.  Show up early and be prepared for a day of fun and a good workout!
